Multijunction solar cell mesa isolation: Correlation between process, morphology and cell performance

Multijunction solar cells must be electrically isolated from one to another at the end of fabrication process; a step known as mesa isolation. In this study, three different techniques are assessed perform step: saw-dicing, wet etching and plasma etching. Triple junction were fabricated with each process open-circuit voltages measured in order compare impact technique on device performance. An optional treatment is also proposed clean sidewalls after isolation process. The characterized by scanning electron microscopy atomic force assess profile length roughness respectively. cell performance was then correlated sidewall for all techniques. This study indicates that followed maximizes performance, thanks short low roughness.
